Description :
Septidine solution is a brown solution containing povidone-lodine 10% w/v (equivalent to 1.0% available lodine).
Pharmacodynamics/Pharmacokinetics :
Povidone- lodine is iodine complexed with povidone that is used as disinfectant and antiseptic. Septidine solution gradually release iodine to exert and effect against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, cysts, and spores. Iodine penetrates into microorganisms and attacks key groups of proteins (in particular the free sulfer amino acids cysteine and methionine), nucleotides and fatty acids, which results in cell death. Septidine solution is slightly absorbed when applied to the skin.
Indication :
For the treatment of contaminated wounds and pre-operative preparation of the skin and mucous membranes as well as for the disinfection of medical equipment.
Recommended dose :
Apply full strength of Septidine solution with sterile gauze to the wounds, cuts and burns directly (can be repeated as often as needed).
Contraindication :
- Hypersensitivity to povidone – iodine or iodine preparation.
- Premature neonates or those weighing less than 1.5 kg.
Warnings and Precautions :
- For external use only (Do not swallow).
- Avoid contact with eyes. If this happens, wash out thoroughly with plenty of water.
- Regular or prolonged use should be avoided in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy.
- Application to large areas of broken skin should be avoided as excessive absorption of iodine may occur.
- Absorption of povidone-iodine may interfere with thyroid function tests.
- Pregnant or breast-feeding women.
Interactions with Other Medicaments :
- Antimicrobial activity may be reduced at high pH.
- Dermatological reactions, described as second- and third- burns, were observed in 4 patients associated with a reaction of povidone-iodine solution and compound benzoin tincture.
- A mixture of povidone-iodine solution and hydrogen peroxide has caused explosions.
Pregnancy and Lactation :
Hypothyroidism has occurred in neonates both as a result of absorption of iodine from povidone-iodine applied to the neonate and also to the mother during pregnancy or breast-feeding. Septidine should not be used during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Undesirable Effects :
Septidine can cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. If irritation occur, use of Septidine should be discontinued.
Application to large areas of broken skin may produce systemic adverse effects associated with iodine and metabolic acidosis, hypernatremia, and renal impairment.
Overdose and Treatment :
In the case of accidental ingestion of septidine, do not induce vomiting. Drink serval glasses of milk or water. Do not give anyting by mouth to an unconscious person. The patient should be taken to a doctor or to the nearest hospital without delay.
