Description :
Bromcolex is a mucolytic agent used in the treatment of respiratory disorders associated with productive cough. Its mechanism is increasing the volume and decreasing the viscosity of the secretions and enable them to be more easily moved.
Each tablet contains :
Bromhexine hydrochloride 8 mg.
Each 5 ml of syrup contains :
Bromhexine hydrochloride 4 mg.
Pharmacokinetics :
Bromhexine hydrochloride is rapidly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract. It is widely distributed to body tissues and is highly bound to plasma proteins. About 85-90% of a dose is excreted in the urine mainly as metabolites. It crosses the blood brain barrier and small amounts cross the placenta.
Indications :
Mucolytic in tracheobronchitis, emphysema, chronic inflammatory pulmonary conditions and asthma.
Recommended Dose :
Tablets :
Adults and children over 10 years : 1 tablet three times a day.
Syrup :
Adults and children over 10 years : 2 teaspoonfuls (10 ml) three times a day.
Children 5- 10 years : 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) three times a day.
Children 2-5 years : ½ teaspoonful (2.5 ml) three times a day or as directed by a physician.
Contraindication :
Bromcolex is contraindicated for use in patients with known hypersensitivity to bromhexine hydrochloride or any compound of the formulation.
Warnings and Precautions :
Since mucolytics may disrupt the gastric mucosal barrier, bromcolex should be used with care in patients with a history of peptic ulcerations. Care is also advisable in asthmatic patients. Clearance of bromhexine or its metabolites may be reduced in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Interactions with Other Medicaments :
There is no known significant interaction with other medicines.
Pregnancy and Lactation :
It is advisable to avoid use during the first trimester of pregnancy and lactation.
Undesirable Effects :
Gastro-intestinal side-effects may occur occasionally with bromhexine. Other reported adversed effects include headache, dizziness, sweating, and skin rashes.
Overdose and Treatment :
Cases of intoxication have not been reported. In the event of overdosage, the stomach should be lavaged. Further symptomatic treatment is recommended.
Storage Condition :
Store below 30°C.
Dosage Forms and Packaging Available :
BROMCOLEX Tablet are available in aluminum foil strip packs of 10 tablets and in HDPE plastic bottle of 500, 1000 tablets. BROMCOLEX Syrups are available in glass bottle of 60-ml and in plastic bottle of 1 liter.
